Immigration and Custom Enforcement. This agency used to be a part of old INS. When DHS was formed, enforcement personnel of US Customs Service and INS were combined to form ICE, which is now responsible for a large part of immigration enforcement activity.

ICE released the 2009 ICE Secure Communities Standard Operating Procedures document for Secure Communities, an initiative making the removal of aliens convicted of serious criminal offenses from the US a priority. This document describes processes that enable the routing of response messages to the FBI and State Identification Bureaus to confirm identity and immigration status during incarceration booking.

AGENCY: Privacy Office, DHS.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Assistant Secretary John Morton announced that ICE is undertaking a major overhaul of the agency's immigration detention system.
"This change marks an important step in our ongoing efforts to enforce immigration laws smartly and effectively," said Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano. "We are improving detention center management to prioritize health, safety and uniformity among our facilities while ensuring security, efficiency and fiscal responsibility."
ICE updated its list of Student and Exchange Visitor Program approved schools on 29th June 2009.
