Using the Global Entry Trusted Traveler Program to expedite their clearance upon arriving in the U.S., more than a million international travelers have already substantially reduced their travel time. Run by U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the program streamlines the screening process at 25 U.S. international airports for pre-approved international travelers using biometric identification. Participants use automated kiosks to present their machine-readable passport or U.S. permanent resident card, use the scanner for fingerprint verification, and make a customs declaration. The kiosk issues a transaction receipt to the traveler, who then proceeds to the baggage claim and exit.
Global Entry reduces average wait times by up to 70 percent, and most Global Entry participants are processed in less than five minutes. Although the program is most often used by frequent travelers, international travelers of any frequency can qualify for the program.
The U.S. and South Korea recently announced an agreement to participate in each country’s trusted traveler programs—the U.S. Global Entry program and the Korean Smart Entry Service. Korea is the third country to have a reciprocal, trusted traveler partnership with the United States, joining the Netherlands and Canada, and the agreement makes Korea the first permanent trusted traveler program partner the United States has in Asia.
